National Service Scheme
In India, the idea of involving students in the task of national service dates back to the times of Mahatma Gandhi, the father of the nation. The central theme which he tried to impress upon his student audience time and again, was that they should always keep before them, their social responsibility. The first duty of the students should be, not to treat their period of study as one of the opportunities for indulgence in intellectual luxury, but for preparing themselves for final dedication in the service of those who provided the sinews of the nation with the national goods & services so essential to society. Advising them to form a living contact with the community in whose midst their institution is located, he suggested that instead of undertaking academic research about economic and social disability, the students should do “something positive so that the life of the villagers might be raised to a higher material and moral level”.
The National Service Scheme (NSS) is a Central Sector Scheme of Government of India, Ministry of Youth Affairs & Sports. It provides opportunity to the student youth of 11th & 12th Class of schools at +2 Board level and student youth of Technical Institution, Graduate & Post Graduate at colleges and University level of India to take part in various government led community service activities & programmes. The sole aim of the NSS is to provide hands on experience to young students in delivering community service. Since inception of the NSS in the year 1969, the number of students strength increased from 40,000 to over 3.8 million students in various universities, colleges and Institutions of higher learning have volunteered to take part in various community service programmes.
NSS Symbol
The symbol of the National Service Scheme, as appearing on the cover page of this Manual is based on the ‘ Rath ‘ wheel of the Konark Sun Temple situated in Orissa. These giant wheels of the Sun Temple portray the cycle of creation, preservation and release, and signify the movement in life across time and space. The design of the symbol, a simplified form of the Sun-chariot wheel primarily depicts movement. The wheel signifies the progressive cycle of life.
NSS Badge
The NSS symbol is embossed on the NSS badge. The NSS volunteers wear it while undertaking any programme of community service. The Red colour in the badge indicates that the NSS volunteers are full of bold i.e., lively, active energetic and full of high spirit. The navy blue colour indicates the cosmos of which the NSS is a tiny part, ready to contribute its share for the welfare of the mankind.
NSS Motto
The Motto of NSS “Not Me But You“, reflects the essence of democratic living and upholds the need for self-less service. NSS helps the students development & appreciation to other person’s point of view and also show consideration towards other living beings. The philosophy of the NSS is a good doctrine in this motto, which underlines on the belief that the welfare of an individual is ultimately dependent on the welfare of the society as a whole and therefore, the NSS volunteers shall strive for the well-being of the society.
Objective of NSS
- To enable the students to understand the community in which they work.
- To understand themselves in relation to their community.
- To identify the needs and problems in the community in the solution of which they can be involved.
- To develop among themselves a sense of social and civic responsibility
- To utilise their knowledge in finding practical solutions to individual and community problems
- To develop competence required for group living and sharing responsibilities
- To gain skills in mobilising community participation
- To acquire leadership qualities and democratic attitudes
- To develop capacity to meet emergencies and natural disasters and
- To practise national integration and social harmony
NSS Unit
NSS units of the college aim at inculcating social consciousness among youth with an overall objective of personality development through community service. NSS volunteers of the college organize blood donation camps, Tree plantations, Cleanliness Drive and seminars to educate people against social evils like Female Feticide, dowry, Drug Abuse, AIDS etc.
The college has also been registered in RED RIBBON CLUB. The essential idea of the NSS activity is not only to make students to understand involvement in activities but also for preparing themselves for their dedication in social useful productive service.
